New York City, Oct. 13, 2009 – With 387 magazine closures and 259 new launches to date in 2009, magazine closings continued to outpace launches, according to MediaFinder.com. .

For the third quarter of 2009 (July-Sept), 104 magazines folded and 72 new magazines launched. Over the last nine months and into Oct., the Regional Interest category was the top category for new launches with 15 new titles including Maine Magazine and The 45th (N. Michigan). Food had 14 magazines, including Edible Queens. Other popular magazine categories for new launches were Health & Fitness Home with 13 new titles each.

Interestingly, Regional Interest magazines also topped the list of ceased magazines, with 31 magazines folding, including Tampa Bay Living. Other magazine categories that experienced a decline in numbers include Business and Lifestyle, with 14 and 13 folding, respectively.

In addition, magazines continued to turn to the web, with 21 magazines ceasing print editions and turned to online only publications, during the third quarter. Over the same period, 64 publications ceased their print editions but continued online, including Creativity and Majors in Golf, with hunting and fishing magazines (5) and music (4) topping the list. THIS PARAGRAPH DOESN”T MAKE SENSE TO ME. Business-to-business publications accounted for 75 of the new launches, 130 of the ceased magazines and 24 of the magazines that ceased print editions over the last nine months.
