40 MAGAZINES FOLD IN  2009 ACCORDING TO MEDIAFINDER.COM

New York City, Feb.9, 2009 - The downturn in the economy continues to impact magazines, with 525 magazines ceasing publication in 2008 according to MediaFinder.com - the largest online database of U.S. and Canadian publications. In 2009, 40 publications have already folded, including six titles from now defunct Double Down Media, and 13 now publish online-only versions, such as PC MAGAZINE, PLAYGIRL and INFORMATION SECURITY. DOMINO, COUNTRY HOME, and WONDERTIME are among the many magazines that ceased publication in 2009.

In 2008, regional magazines experienced the biggest decline, losing 33 magazines, while 18 travel magazines ceased publication.  The next largest categories are home and automotive, both categories lost 17 publications in 2008. In the home category, COTTAGE LIVING and HOMEwere both shut down in 2008.

Looking back to 2007, 591 magazines ceased publication, with regional magazines topping the list again, with 37 ceased publications.  Crossword puzzle and college student press, ceased 22 and 20 magazines, respectively.
