Magazine Launches Outnumber Closures in First Half of 2013: MediaFinder Reports that 97 Magazines Launch and 29 Close
New York City, July 9, 2013 – In the first half of 2013, 97 magazines launched, and 29 closed, according to MediaFinder.com—the largest online database of U.S. and Canadian publications. .
The top categories for new launches were “food” and “regional interest,” with new print titles such as Allrecipes.com and Edible Milwaukee, as well as three new magazines for the Hamptons: Beach, Avenue at the Beach, and Daily Summer. Among the ceased titles were Dog World and Stitch Craft Create.
Compared to the same period in 2012, the number of magazine closures slowed from 48 to 29 this year. The number of magazine launches also slowed from 133 in the first half of 2012 to 97 launches in 2013
“Once again we are seeing fewer magazine launches this year over last year, but, at the same time, there are fewer magazine closings,” said Trish Hagood, president of MediaFinder.com. “Bonnier continues to consolidate its magazine group through acquisitions, spin-offs, and closures; while F+W’s acquisition of Interweave has lead to some magazine closures. The luxury trend continues with the launch of such titles as Haute Time and Tempus in addition to the three Hamptons magazines.”
In the business-to-business magazine sector, 14 new titles launched, such as Tonsorial Times during the first half of 2013, compared to 21 new titles in 2012. During the same period, nine b-to-b titles closed, including Lodging Hospitality, compared to eight titles closed in 2012. At the same time, UBM’s technology division announced that it was shutting its print magazines, and Stamats Business Media shut several regional editions of its Meetings Focus magazines.
