Magazine Launches Outnumber Closures in First Nine Months of 2012:MediaFinder Reports that 181 Magazines Launch and 61 Close

New York City, Oct. 1, 2012 – In the first nine months of 2012, 181 magazines launched, and 61 closed, according to MediaFinder.com—the largest online database of U.S. and Canadian publications. .

The top categories for new launches were “regional interest,” “food,” and “lifestyle” with new titles such as Mud and Magnolias, Prevention Guide Top Chef Family Cookbook, and Du Jour. Compared to a year ago, the number of magazine launches in the first nine months was down from 200 new magazines in 2011, to 181 in 2012.

For magazine closures, the number of magazine closures slowed from 128 in 2011 to 61 this year, during the same nine month period. Among the ceased titles are Better Homes & Gardens-Scrapbooks etc. and Stuff Magazine. In addition, Nomad Editions shut down several magazines, including Uncorked, that it had created for the iPad.

“Although we are seeing slightly fewer magazine launches this year over last, we are pleased to see that there are substantially fewer magazine closings,” said Trish Hagood, president of MediaFinder.com. “The luxury trend continues with the launches of Du Jour and M, and there are more to come before year’s end.” In the business-to-business magazine sector, 25 new titles launched, such as Quartz, during the first nine months of 2012. During the same period, 12 b-to-b titles closed, including The Deal.
