More Magazines Started in 2011 than 2010: 239 Magazines Launched in 2011 Versus 193 in 2010 According to MediaFinder.com

NEW YORK CITY, Dec. 15, 2011 In 2011, 239 new magazines launched as compared to 193 magazines in 2010, reported MediaFinder.com—the largest online database of U.S. and Canadian publications. During the same period, only 152 magazines folded, compared to 176 in 2010. .

The top categories for new magazines launches in 2011 were food (25 new magazines), and regional interest (20 new magazines). In the fourth quarter of 2011, new magazine launches included HGTV Magazine and Style.com/Print.

The top categories for magazine closures for 2011 were regional interest (21 magazines) and bridal (19). The bridal publications were impacted by the closure of the 944 Media magazine group and Brides magazine’s folding its regional magazines. Among the magazines that folded in the fourth quarter of 2011 were Fresh Home and GamePro magazines.”

“New magazines continued to launch in 2011 despite the economy and bleak predictions for the magazine industry,” said Trish Hagood, president of MediaFinder.com. “Major publishers are finding success in spinning off magazines from other media, such as Recipe.com, HGTV Magazine, and Style.com/Print. Whenever a new opportunity arises, a new magazine is sure to follow—witness the launch of Social Media Monthly and Occupy!- showing the vibrancy of the industry.”

In the business-to-business magazine sector, the number of new magazine launches increased from 34 titles in 2010, to 62 titles in 2011. At the same time, the number of ceased magazines decreased from 47 in 2010 to 38 in 2011. In this sector, the “business & industry” category continued to show the most growth in 2011 with 11 new titles, such as Tweeting & Business, and the nursing category continued to show the largest decline due to the consolidation of titles by Merion Matters.
